Guardian Homes

Guardian Home

A Guardian Home for a dog is a special arrangement often used by reputable breeders to give their breeding dogs a loving, permanent family home while still keeping them in the breeder’s breeding program. It also means the breeder doesn't have to rehome the dog once they have finished breeding it which is much better for the dog.

Here’s how it works 👇

🏡 Basic Idea

Instead of keeping all breeding dogs in kennels, the breeder places some dogs with carefully chosen families — the Guardian Homes. The family loves the dog as their own pet. The breeder retains breeding rights for a set period or number of litters.

Typical Terms of a Guardian Home Agreement

While each breeder may have different rules, most agreements include:

1. Ownership

  • The breeder technically owns the dog until breeding obligations are fulfilled.

  • After that, full ownership transfers to the Guardian family.

2. Breeding Rights

  • For female dogs, the breeder may have rights to a certain number of litters. The dog may stay with the breeder for several weeks during whelping and puppy-raising.

  • For male dogs, the breeder may use him for stud services a few times per year.

3. Care Requirements

  • The Guardian family agrees to provide:

    • Daily care, love, and training

    • Regular vet visits and vaccinations

    • A safe, healthy home environment

  • The breeder usually covers breeding-related costs, such as genetic testing or pregnancy care.

4. Spay/Neuter

  • Once breeding duties are completed, the breeder will pay for the dog to be spayed or neutered, and ownership is officially transferred.

    ❤️ Benefits

    For the dog:

  • Lives in a normal home instead of a kennel.

  • It gets more quality time and love with the people

  • For the family:

  • Gets a high-quality, purebred dog at low or no upfront cost.

  • For the breeder:

  • Can expand a breeding program ethically while ensuring dogs are well cared for.

Things to Consider

Being a Guardian Home is a serious commitment — it’s not just “getting a free dog.” The family must:

  • Follow breeder’s guidelines closely.

  • Be flexible about temporary separation during breeding.

  • Communicate regularly with the breeder.
